Philosophy
We believe all people have music in them. We believe music heals, and is a source of joy. We believe music is a universal form of communication which can cross and erase all boundaries, real or imagined. We believe that most people just need a little guidance to find that true music inside.
|
When a person decides to bring the music in them out in some way, for some purpose, then our job is to help them do that to his or her fullest capacity.
Our job is not to tell mentees how, or what to do. It is to guide them on their path to discovering the music in them. It is to help them be honest and true to themselves with their music. However, this guidance also includes plenty of basic and advanced instruction, techniques, tips and tricks so that the mentees gain new knowledge and leave with an expanded bag of tricks in their musical toolkit.

Performance Coaching. We cover topics like dealing with performance anxiety; techniques of working with microphones; staging your performance; learning about sound (setting up, working with a sound technician, sound-checking, what to do when there is no technician, crafting your own sound.); how to build a successful set list; how to engage with audiences; and many other performance-related issues.
Vocal Mentoring. We work with singers to improve confidence; understanding of the music they want to perform; vocal techniques; harmony; how to determine which key a song should be performed in to suit a vocal range; work on improvement of vocal range; how to choose cover material; song interpretation; and other topics.
Piano Lessons. Tom provides lessons for the aspiring pianist in Jazz, Blues, Boogie-Woogie and Pop styles. Topics include: what are chords and how to build them; common chord patterns; soloing techniques; left hand patterns for blues and boogie; two hand independence; the jazz number system; repertoire; writing/reading fake sheets; ear training – how to quickly learn and play a song by ear.
Songwriting Coaching. We work with songwriters (individually or in workshop settings) on a variety of songwriting-related topics. These activities are focused on working on actual songwriters’ material, with the purpose of polishing for presentation.
Song Arranging. If you have material that you would like us to arrange, we will do so, either in terms of working with you, or doing it for you. This may include alterations to or completion of lyrics, song structure, melody and/or chords, and addition of instrumentation and/or vocal harmonies.
All from Gisele Piche, parent, Saskatoon:
“Suzanne Paschall is certainly the most accomplished and refined singer-songwriter-performing artists I have had the pleasure to meet, to know and work with. Suzanne generously accepted to work with my daughter last fall; she has continuously sought to impart her knowledge and experience, and has done so in a very non-threatening, encouraging and honest way. I believe Maryse is very fortunate indeed to have found someone like Suzanne to mentor her on her musical journey.”
“Maryse has also had the privilege of working with Tommy Dahl. Tom has agreed to mentor and coach Derick, and in so doing has strengthened the Maryse-Derick duo. Tom’s musical genius has sparked renewed enthusiasm, hope and aspirations in Derick as a pianist.”
“As a parent, I have seen my child reach for her dreams, and witnessed her growth, her joy and her talent. I am grateful, at every lesson, for the opportunities and knowledge that Maryse and Derick have had with Suzanne & Tom. They take their mentoring seriously – their guidance is a gift.”
All from Maryse Piche-Benard & Dérick Blanchard, mentees:
“Tom and Suzanne shared their experience with concerts and showed us every aspect of giving a good show. Teaching us how to compose our own song was amazing with outstanding results. With their great knowledge of music, they gave us helpful tips and inspired us. Suzanne and Tom--you guys have been the best music teachers we've had by far. Thank you!”
